Last updated on February 5th, 2019

I have shared a post on how foreigners can travel Bhutan for free – without having to pay the daily tariff of USD 250/day. One of the ways I have mentioned there is traveling on a Bhutan Personal Guest VISA. I feel I couldn’t make it so clear then given the length of the article.

Therefore, today I am bringing you a separate article to elaborate on it. In this article, you can expect to know how a tourist can travel Bhutan free as a guest of a Bhutanese citizen; what tourist has to do and what a Bhutanese, who is inviting a foreigner as his/her guest, has to do.

I have prepared this article referring the terms and conditions given under clause of ‘Requirements for Personal Guest of Bhutan’ of Immigration Rules and Regulations of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

The free Bhutan Travel package

But this article is specifically for people from countries other than India, Bangladesh and Maldives. People from these three countries can travel Bhutan without Bhutan VISA for free with submission of filled up Bhutan Entry Permit Application Form.

Things Personal Guest Applicant must remember

  • Must be in Bhutan during the scheduled visit of the guest.
  • Personal guest limitation is 2 people a year.
  • Bhutanese younger than 18 years cannot invite a guest.
  • Cannot invite same person more than once as guest.
  • Can invite only person whom you knew outside Bhutan.
  • Your acquaintance with invitee must be of at least 6 months.

Things that Personal Guest invitee must remember

  • No tourist can travel Bhutan on personal guest VISA more than once a year.
  • Personal guest shouldn’t involve in activities except for sightseeing and culture tours.
  • The passport of guest should have the validity of at least 6 months.
  • VISA approval letter must be presented at entry points.
  • Have to pay one-time guest VISA fee of Nu.2,500 during an entry.

Bhutan Personal Guest VISA – Documents Required

  • Filled up Personal Guest Application Form Bhutan.
  • Filled up VISA Application form Bhutan.
  • Citizenship Identity Card copy of the applicant.
  • Travel itinerary of the guest.
  • Passport copy of the person to be invited a guest.
  • Confirmed Return Air ticket/scheduled departure proof.
  • Documents to authenticate the relationship (if any).

The administrative procedures of inviting a person to Bhutan on a Personal Guest VISA are quite lengthy and strict. It’s but to embrace government’s tourism policy of ‘High Value, Low Impact’ which limits Bhutan only for genuine visitors.

However, if you have someone from Bhutan with whom you have studied together or worked in a team for certain assignments outside Bhutan, travelling on Bhutan Personal Guest VISA will be quite an easy choice.

  1. Hi,

This is very helpful. Where can you send the completed form to? I am trying to complete one to invite and cannot find the address I need to submit to. Many thanks.

  2. Hi,
I studied at RTC for half a year and would love to return to see my friends. Is it possible for one of them to invite me?

  3. Hi John,

As per Bhutan Immigration Rules and Regulations, they cannot invite you as guest. Because you haven’t become friends outside Bhutan. However, you can ask your friends to go and ask about it at Immigration office.

  4. How do you calculate the duration of acquaintance? I have a Bhutanese friend whom I met in New York during a youth conference which lasts for a week. Since then we have been friends on Facebook and chatting every now and then. Will this make me eligible for a personal guest visa to Bhutan? Thank you very much.

  5. Hi Thein,

The rule doesn’t say for how long you should have been friends. It only says host and guest should have association outside Bhutan. If your friend can prove that with some documents to immigration people, they do honour and accept the application.

    Regards

  6. Dear Sherab,

I have a Bhutanese friend that will send me a personal invitation during this year. I would like to ask you how long can I saty in Bhutan with this invitation?

    Thank you

    Regards

    Teresa

  7. Hi Teresa,

The Immigration rules have nothing explicit about the permissible duration of the stay. It seems immigration office decides on it. I think it would be better you ask your friend to go to the immigration office and ask about it before sending an invitation.

    Regards

  8. Hi there, I have several Bhutanese friends I met during my study abroad program in Bhutan who I became great friends with and we have kept in contact for years about returning to Bhutan. Is it only possible to get a guest visa if the friend and I have had contact outside of Bhutan? If so, is there an amount of time that is necessary for contact outside Bhutan? I have actually had a friend try to obtain a guest visa for me who was told that outside contact is necessary, but I’m just making sure. Thank you

  9. Hi Stephen,

That is what is in the rules and regulations just to avoid everyone applying for a guest visa. But if your friend can adequately prove immigration staffs that your friendship, they actually do issue the visa. Please ask your friend about it if you wanna proceed with it. Thanks.
